‘The Lord is my portion’ (Lamentations 3:24)

How poor are the possessions of the world in comparison to the Christian’s portion; they last for just a few days; they cannot satisfy; they cannot bless. But dear friends, the Lord Almighty has given us Himself. He says, “I AM YOUR INHERITANCE.”

We are always with Him, and all He has is ours. His power is ours to support us, His wisdom to guide us, His love to comfort us, His mercy to relieve us, His goodness to supply us, His justice to defend us, His covenant to secure us, and His heaven to receive us.

He is a suitable, sufficient, and immutable portion. We are to live upon Him, draw from Him, rejoice in Him, and look to Him for all we need. For Him we must renounce all other; to His glory all our efforts must be directed, and with Him we must walk each day.

Others cannot deprive us of our portion, fire cannot consume it, nor rust corrupt it; let us therefore not be too much affected by what happens here on earth – if the streams are dried up, the fountain remains; if others fail or deceive us, our God is the portion of our inheritance and of our cup. He maintains us, He is our strength and OUR PORTION FOREVER.

Begone, ye gilded vanities,
I seek the only good;
To real bliss my wishes rise,
The favour of my God.
Thy love, my God, my portion be,
And let me find my all in Thee.

Journal Jottings

‘I have been suffering much from the affection in my throat, and once feared that I should be quite laid aside. For days, the words of the Psalmist followed me, “I am like a broken vessel”; and I was deeply depressed, fearing that the Lord might throw me on one side, as he had others. I knew he could do without me, and that he would be justified in refusing to use such a creature as I am. But I am now better, though I feel it necessary to confine myself principally to house duties.’
