‘He cannot deny Himself’ (2 Timothy 2:13)

God has opened His heart to us in His word. He has told us all His mind. He intends every word He has spoken, and will fulfil every promise He has made. He cannot deny Himself or falsify His word; He can have no temptation to do so. Humanity may be fickle, for we are like a bruised reed; Jehovah is always the same, He is the rock of ages.

He will have compassion on the miserable, who seek His face; and show mercy to all who plead with Him in Jesus’ name. He cannot cast out a returning sinner, or refuse to receive a confessing backslider. He cannot turn a deaf ear to our cries, or refuse to deliver us when we call on His name.

He will take His own time, but will never dishonour His faithful word. He will be rigidly faithful, both to His threatening and promises. Let us take courage and trust in Him; we have His word, it is true from the beginning; we have this assurance, that HE CANNOT DENY HIMSELF. Let us therefore rest on the word of our God; let us trust Him though the night is dark and the burdens are heavy. He exhorts, “Trust in Jehovah forever, for in Jehovah there is everlasting strength”.

God is love, and will not leave you,
When you most his kindness need,
God is true – nor can deceive you –
Though your faith be weak indeed.

THE DAILY REMEMBRANCER by James Smith (1802-1862)

Journal Jottings

‘My enemies now took to writing and printing tracts against me, to endeavour to injure me, and one large placard full of misrepresentations was printed, but the Lord interfered and prevented its circulation. But none of these things affected my congregation, for the chapel was full; nor my usefulness, for souls were being continually brought to God. My daily cry was, “Lord, teach me how to preach to sinners, that they may be brought to believe!”
