This month we are travelling by steam train from Winchcombe to Toddington and then walking back. The length of the walk is 3.8 miles. A single ticket costs £4. We did the reverse walk last year.
From Toddington station, the walk initially proceeds along a path close to the railway line, as far as Hayles Abbey Halt, and is flat. From Hailes, the route climbs, but gradually, and the last part of the walk, down Puck Pit Lane, is all downhill.
As there is not much parking at Winchcombe station (in Greet), we will meet at Back Lane car park (cost £1 for all day) at 1400 and walk to the station – a flat walk of 0.9 miles. Both walks combined make it 4.7 miles.
The train leaves at 1453 and takes about 10 minutes. This is later than we would have liked, but unfortunately the earlier train is too early. We are therefore likely to finish later than usual as we won’t start walking until just after 3pm.
For those who would like to walk a shorter distance, I suggest walking to the station and back, and/or a round Winchcombe walk, perhaps including the riverside path.
Optional lunch beforehand will be at the Corner Cupboard in Winchcombe, which is 0.5 miles from the Back Lane car park. Please note that it only has a small car park.
Please let me know by Wed evening (29 March) via the ‘more information’ button in the email whether you are a) attending the lunch and b) taking the train. I will buy the tickets on Sat morning.
PLEASE NOTE that the B4632 Cleeve Hill to Winchcombe road is completely closed for repairs about halfway along at the moment. The work is due to last from 20-31 March, so in theory it should open again on 1 April, but please check before you set out! Alternative routes include A435-Alderton-Toddington or A435-Gotherington-Gretton.
