TDR: 10 July (Proverbs 27:18)

‘Whoever waits upon their master shall be honoured’ (Proverbs 27:18)

And who is our master but Jesus? Someone is your master: His name is the LORD JESUS CHRIST. We have chosen to serve Him, because He chose to save us. He has given us the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of our sins, so that we may serve Him without fear, in righteousness and holiness, all the days of our life.

Our happiness is found in obeying our Master’s word, and studying our Master’s will. Let us wait on Him for the word of command, and not dare to proceed without it. Let us wait on Him for ability. Let us wait His time for every promised blessing, and continue looking in faith until we receive it. Let us expect to live at His table, and wait on Him for a supply of all our needs, both spiritual and temporal.

Let us wait on Him in private, as well as in public. He will honour us, for He has said: “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me” [John 12:26]. We shall know the truth, and the truth shall set us free; and such are free indeed [John 8:32].

That wisdom, Lord, on me bestow,
From every evil to depart,
To stop the mouth of every foe,
While upright both in life and heart,
The proofs of godly fear I give,
And show them how true Christians live.
